Japanese Sake: When most people think of sake, they think of Japanese alcohol — rightly so. In Japan, in percentage terms, much less sake is drunk than, for example, beer. In Japan, the word sake is even a generic term for alcoholic beverages. What we call (Japanese) sake in this country is more often called nihonshu in Japan. Incidentally, the term rice wine is misleading, because although the alcohol content is closer to that of wine, the brewing process is more like that of a beer. There are many different varieties, the taste and quality of which mainly depend on the rice and water used.

What they all have in common is that the bottle the sake is bought in is only used for storage. Before being served to guests, the sake is poured into the Tokkuri bottle intended for presentation. This is usually always open at the top and therefore looks more like a carafe. Some types of sake also need to take a breath before presenting the sake bottle and the often matching sake cups to your guests.
